On December 10, the Ahmedabad district administration and city police announced a vigorous crackdown ahead of Uttarayan 2026, targeting the illegal sale and use of Chinese manjha. As part of a coordinated city‑wide operation, they confiscated more than ₹8 lakh worth of material, including 2,145 spools of banned thread and 40 firkis, according to a public notice from the Additional Commissioner of Police (Special Branch). The biggest haul came from Ramol Police Station, where 2,040 spools worth ₹8,16,000 were seized. Sarkhej Police recovered 40 firkis valued at ₹8,000, Amraiwadi Police took 90 spools worth ₹18,900, while Shaherkotda Police confiscated 15 spools for ₹3,750. An autorickshaw estimated at ₹1,70,000 was also taken as case property. Charges have been filed mainly under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant provisions of the Gujarat Police Act.
To raise awareness, police teams visited schools, public spaces and busy neighbourhoods, distributing posters and banners that explained the dangers of Chinese manjha and urged safer kite‑flying practices. The administration urged residents to celebrate Uttarayan responsibly and to report any illicit sales or usage to the nearest police station.
In a separate initiative, the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) conducted surprise inspections at eight medical stores in Ahmedabad that were suspected of selling cough syrup without a prescription. All eight outlets received show‑cause notices and were asked to submit an immediate explanation. This action is part of the FDCA’s broader effort to ensure that medicines sold in the state are safe and of high quality. Authorities confirmed that strict legal action will be taken against anyone violating drug safety laws. The inspection covered pharmacies in Ghatlodia, Satellite, Vejalpur and Prahladnagar, including Apollo Pharmacy (Ghatlodia), Krishna Medical, Solcure Pharmacy, Namnidhi Pharma, Nam: Wellness, Natraj Medical, Apollo Pharmacy (Vejalpur) and Apollo Pharmacy (Prahladnagar).
