Himachal focuses on tribal development; 35,000 families benefitted

Shimla, Oct 19 – Himachal Pradesh has pumped more than ₹3,000 crore into tribal development over the last two‑and‑a‑half years, a state official said Sunday. The money has hit the ground fast, improving roads, schools, hospitals and jobs for more than 35,000 tribal families.

New highways, bridges and public buildings are appearing across the state’s rugged terrain, while upgraded health posts, mobile clinics and reliable water and electricity services reach remote hamlets. Livelihood programmes focus on horticulture, animal husbandry and local crafts, helping households keep a steady income.

The Tribal Area Development Programme keeps a strong financial base each year. Budgeted amounts were ₹855 crore in 2022‑23, ₹857 crore in 2023‑24, ₹890 crore in 2024‑25 and a planned ₹639 crore for 2025‑26. Civil works like roads, bridges and public buildings used ₹291 crore in 2022‑23, ₹288 crore in 2023‑24 and ₹63 crore in 2024‑25, with ₹125 crore earmarked for 2025‑26.

In high‑altitude areas the state is strengthening basic services. Health sub‑centres are upgraded, mobile outreach units roam villages, and drinking water and power grids are made more reliable. Local food processing and sheep‑raising projects give tribal families new ways to earn.

The Vibrant Village Programme, covering 75 frontier habitations in Kinnaur, Pooh and Spiti, has mapped these villages and set plans to boost infrastructure, social services and economic chances. Construction of roads, housing and community centres is already underway in the border areas.

Education gets a dedicated push. Four Eklavya Model Residential Schools in Nichar, Bharmour, Pangi and Lahaul host 1,008 students today, and about 150 new students join Class 6 each year. New school‑hostel complexes are being built in Pangi and Lahaul, with ₹2 crore and ₹1.9 crore already released.

The state has gone beyond its 20‑point programme targets: 7,502 families were reached in 2022‑23, 8,598 in 2023‑24, and a record 12,663 families were served in 2024‑25—almost twice the goal. For 2025‑26 the target sits at 6,314 families.

These investments are reshaping Himachal Pradesh’s tribal communities, giving them better roads, reliable services, stronger schools and new income sources.
