In a tense courtroom moment on November 12, 2024, a repeat offender named Vinoth tried to throw a slipper at a judge in Chennai. Vinoth, who had just been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for a petrol‑bomb attack on the governor’s house (Raj Bhavan) the day before, was being heard on another case at the Madras High Court campus.
The judge, T. Chandrasekaran, had already found Vinoth guilty of hurling a petrol bomb at Raj Bhavan on October 25, 2023. The sentence was meant to reflect the seriousness of the attack and his prior criminal record.
On Thursday, Vinoth was escorted from Central Prison, Puzhal, to the Sixth Additional Sessions Court. He was charged with a pre‑existing petrol‑bomb incident at a Tasmac outlet in T. Nagar. As the hearing started, Vinoth loudly complained that the 10‑year sentence was “too harsh” and that he was being unfairly targeted. Before anyone could respond, he pulled off a slipper and threw it at the judge.
Police officers quickly tackled Vinoth and removed him from the courtroom, preventing the slipper from hitting the judge. No one was hurt, but the incident caused a brief panic in the court.
Judge Pandiarajan expressed his displeasure and told prison officials to tighten security for future hearings. The court also decided that Vinoth will only appear via video link for the rest of the case, to avoid further disruptions.
Security officials will file a report on the lapse, and additional charges could be added based on that investigation. The T. Nagar petrol‑bomb case remains pending, even as Vinoth serves his 10‑year term for the Raj Bhavan attack.
