HP: Union MoS Ajay Tamta visits flood-affected areas of Mandi, Kullu

Union Minister Ajay Tamta visited the flood-hit areas of Mandi and Kullu in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday to check the damage from the devastating monsoon rains. The Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Jairam Thakur, joined him during the tour.

Tamta, who serves as the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, inspected the battered National Highway and met with local officials to discuss relief efforts. Thakur told that this visit followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Himachal Pradesh. “After the PM’s visit, we assigned duties to seven central ministers to assess the ground-level losses. Today’s meeting was crucial—they shared excellent suggestions, and I thank the PM for this. Tamta will submit a detailed damage report to the central ministry and present it in a high-level meeting. We hope the state government speeds up relief work soon.”

Himachal Pradesh has faced its worst monsoon season in years, with heavy rains triggering landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts since June 20. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed 404 deaths so far—229 from rain-related disasters and 175 from road accidents. This highlights the challenges for Himachal Pradesh’s transport network during the rainy season.

Breaking down the rain-related tragedies: 48 people died in landslides, 11 in flash floods, 17 in cloudbursts, 38 drowned, 15 lost lives to snake bites, 17 to electrocution, and 44 from falls on steep hills. Beyond human losses, 462 people suffered injuries, 41 remain missing, 2,094 animals perished, and nearly 26,955 poultry birds died.

The monsoon fury wrecked public infrastructure across the hill state. Roads, power lines, water supply schemes, health centers, and schools suffered massive damage. Electricity woes persist, with 373 distribution transformers still offline, leaving thousands in the dark. Water supply hit hard too—188 schemes are disrupted due to broken pipelines and blocked paths.

SDMA called the destruction unprecedented, with thousands of homes, farms, and public assets ruined. The total damage estimate stands at a staggering Rs 4,48,905.58 lakh—over Rs 44,890 crore. As recovery efforts continue in Himachal Pradesh’s flood-affected districts, residents hope for quick central aid to rebuild.
