Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his best wishes to millions of people celebrating the second day of Chhath Puja, known as Kharna, on Sunday. In a post on the social‑media platform X, the PM wrote, “Heartfelt greetings to all on the auspicious occasion of Chhath Parva’s Kharna Puja. I respectfully bow down to all the devotees observing the fast!”
The Kharna day is a key part of the four‑day Sun‑festival. Devotees fast from sunrise to sunset, eating and drinking nothing until the sun sets. After sunset, they break the fast with a special offering of jaggery‑kheer (a sweet rice pudding) to the Sun God, Surya. The act of breaking the fast marks the official start of a 36‑hour water‑free fast that continues through the rest of the festival.
During his X message, Modi also shared a popular Chhath song sung by Bihari star Dinesh Lal Yadav “Nirahua” – the lyrics “Sukh leke ugayi, Dukh leke dubayi.” He added a melodic chant by Maithili Thakur, “Sona Satkuniya Ho Dinanaath,” inviting listeners to join the tradition.
Other top officials joined the greetings. Union Home Minister Amit Shah celebrated the sacred significance of Kharna, noting that it “starts the fast, worship, and adoration of Chhathi Maiya.” He wished the public continued welfare and spiritual strength.
Health Minister J.P. Nadda echoed the sentiment, wishing devotees happiness, prosperity, and good health. He emphasized Chhath as a festival of gratitude to nature and the Sun.
With simple, heartfelt words, the Modi‑government highlighted the cultural heritage of Chhath Puja, encouraging people to observe the fast and enjoy the timeless songs that echo across the Indian plains.
