The Indian Air Force (IAF) held a conference in New Delhi on Nov 14 to discuss how the country can build its own electronic warfare (EW) systems. The event, called “Leveraging Technology for Universal Modular Scalable Architecture for EW Systems,” aimed to show that future EW equipment can be upgraded quickly and cost‑effectively with open‑system designs.
Key points from the conference
- Air Marshal Vijay Kumar Garg, head of the IAF’s Maintenance Command, explained why Open System Architecture matters. He said it helps keep EW weapons up‑to‑date while cutting delivery times and prices.
- The Air Marshal called for teamwork between universities, defence research bodies, and private companies. He said all of them must work together to boost India’s EW capabilities.
- Air Commodore V Krishna Kumar noted several parts of EW systems that Indian industry and academia are ready to supply. The focus is on components that can be made locally, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
Attendees included academics, DRDO officials and representatives from defence equipment manufacturers. The conference is part of a larger push by the Ministry of Defence to make India’s defence industry more self‑reliant.
Other military news from the weekend
- An IAF PC‑7 Mk II trainer crashed near Chennai around 14:25 on Friday. The pilot ejected safely, and no civilian property was damaged. A Court of Inquiry has been set up to investigate the accident.
- The Indian Army announced that the next round of the joint exercise “Ajeya Warrior” with the British Army will run from Nov 17 to 30 at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan. The drill will sharpen counter‑terrorism tactics in semi‑urban terrain and deepen India‑UK defence ties.
The IAF and Army statements underline India’s focus on improving domestic defence production and strengthening international partnerships.
