Kolkata – The Indian Coast Guard said it seized another Bangladeshi fishing trawler this Monday, adding to a string of arrests that have drawn attention to cross‑border fishing near the Bay of Bengal.
The trawler, called FB Mayer Daya, was picked up during a routine patrol. Police found 26 Bangladeshi fishermen aboard. The vessel was brought to the Fraserganj coast‑police station in South 24 Parganas, where the men will appear before the Kakdwip sub‑divisional court on Tuesday.
Earlier, the Coast Guard detained 29 fishermen from another trawler, Amina, on Sunday. In just two days, a total of 55 Bangladeshi fishermen have been held by Indian authorities for violating Indian territorial waters.
The repeated incursions have raised concerns among local fishing groups. “We keep seeing Bangladesh trawlers enter Indian waters,” said Satinath Patra, secretary of the Sundarban Fishermen Workers Union. “When relations were smoother, fishermen were usually returned after a short stay. But now, diplomatic friction is leading to prisoners in both countries.”
The decision to tighten security followed the recent death of an Indian fisherman detained in a Bangladeshi jail. Police said the incident spurred additional patrols along the coast.
Earlier in the year, another trawler with 13 Bangladeshi fishermen was seized in September, and the Coast Guard has since continued to patrol the Bay of Bengal to protect Indian fishing rights.
These actions highlight growing tensions over coastal fishing rights and diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.
