Union Minister Giriraj Singh sparked fresh debate on Sunday when he blamed India’s partition in 1947 for a Muslim cleric’s controversial remark, “I know how to kill.” Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Singh called the statement a sign of “historical mistakes” from that era.
Singh, who serves as Union Textiles Minister, pointed fingers at religious leaders, or maulvis, saying they’ve long pushed to turn India into a Muslim nation. “From the beginning, maulvis have tried this,” he said. “Wherever their population grows, social harmony breaks down. People like Tauqeer Raza and Owaisi stir trouble, but our predecessors made the real errors.”
He went further, suggesting that if Muslims had gone to Pakistan and Hindus had come to India during the 1947 partition, the country wouldn’t face these issues today. “No maulvi would dare say, ‘I know how to die; I also know how to kill,'” Singh added.
His words came after viral videos of prominent clerics, including Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan, spread online. Raza has a history of bold statements on religious rights and protests, and many have slammed his latest comments for fueling communal tensions in India.
Singh didn’t stop there. He turned his criticism toward Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming Gandhi is part of a plot with billionaire George Soros to split India apart. “Rahul Gandhi stands exposed,” Singh said. “He tried the same in Leh, but remember, this is India—no one can break it.”
This isn’t the first time Singh has stirred controversy on these topics. He has previously argued that India suffers today because not all Muslims went to Pakistan during partition. He has also warned that a growing Muslim population threatens India’s cultural identity, drawing sharp backlash from opposition parties and minority communities.
As debates over communal harmony and India’s partition legacy heat up, Singh’s remarks highlight ongoing divides in the country’s politics.
