“India and Russia must do more to widen people-to-people relations”: Foreign Affairs Expert

Foreign affairs expert Robinder Sachdev calls Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit to India a big deal. He says it comes at a tense time, with world affairs shaken by U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. India and Russia want to build stronger ties, Sachdev told on Wednesday.

“We’ve built solid government links in defense and oil,” Sachdev explained. “But now, India and Russia need to boost people-to-people connections to make our trade and strategic relations even deeper.”

Sources say India and Russia are locking in dates for Putin’s trip, likely in early December. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov plans to head to India first, paving the way for the summit and talks on key bilateral issues.

Lavrov dropped the news during the 80th UN General Assembly session on September 27. He confirmed Putin’s December stop in New Delhi as part of ongoing diplomatic moves.

Lavrov praised the strong India-Russia relations, touching on trade, military cooperation, finance, humanitarian aid, healthcare, high-tech fields, artificial intelligence, and teamwork in groups like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS.

On India’s trade choices, Lavrov stressed respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach. “We fully back India’s national interests and its foreign policy,” he said. He added that India handles its own decisions, including deals on Russian oil, through top-level talks.
