India and Thailand Strengthen Military Ties with 14th Edition of Joint Exercise MAITREE
The 14th edition of the India-Thailand joint military exercise, called MAITREE-XIV, officially kicked off with a grand opening ceremony at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya. The exercise started on September 1 and will run until September 14, 2025.
This important military training program helps India and Thailand work together closely, building stronger cooperation, understanding, and interoperability between their armies. The last edition of MAITREE was held at Fort Vachiraprakan in Thailand’s Tak Province.
The Indian Army is sending 120 troops from the Madras Regiment, while the Royal Thai Army is participating with 53 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 14th Infantry Brigade. The focus of the exercise is on counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban areas, using company-level tactics.
During these two weeks, the soldiers will take part in various drills, including tactical planning, special weapons skills, fitness exercises, and raiding operations. The highlight will be a 48-hour validation exercise, where both armies will test their skills in realistic operational scenarios.
MAITREE is a key joint exercise between India and Thailand that started in 2006. It plays a major role in boosting defense cooperation, peace, and regional security.
This year’s exercise also reflects the strong bond between the two countries. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Thailand and met Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. Leaders from both nations emphasized their commitment to enhancing strategic partnership in various areas, including defense, trade, connectivity, culture, and people-to-people links.
Both countries are working together on security issues like maritime security, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and fighting transnational crime. Regular dialogues and cooperation aim to address threats and challenges in a fast-changing regional and global security environment.
India and Thailand remain committed to peace, stability, and shared security in Southeast Asia and beyond. The ongoing military exercises like MAITREE demonstrate their dedication to strengthening these bonds for a safer future.
