India is gearing up to host a major global event focused on tackling maritime challenges. In 2027, the country will organize the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Chennai, right alongside the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) Golden Jubilee celebrations. This exciting three-day gathering aims to boost international maritime cooperation and showcase India’s strong leadership in the field.

The summit will feature standout highlights like an International Coast Guard Fleet Review and a World Coast Guard Seminar. These events will bring together coast guard leaders from around the world to discuss key issues and build stronger ties.

The decision came during the 4th CGGS in Rome, Italy, on September 11-12, 2024, where delegates from 115 countries and international organizations unanimously picked India to lead the 2027 edition. ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani highlighted a key point: no single nation can handle all maritime problems alone. He stressed that the Chennai summit will create an open platform to improve interoperability, build trust, and ramp up global Coast Guard cooperation.

In Rome, DG Sivamani had a special meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He also delivered a powerful keynote speech called ‘Guardians Against the Blaze,’ which spotlighted the ICG’s skills in handling fire emergencies at sea.

During the official handover of the CGGS Presidency, DG Sivamani praised the summit as a shining example of worldwide Coast Guard teamwork against common threats. He thanked the Italian Coast Guard for their warm hospitality and the Japan Coast Guard for managing the CGGS Secretariat.

On the sidelines, DG Sivamani met with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard to deepen ties. Their talks, guided by the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029’s Defence Cooperation Clause, focused on boosting collaboration in areas like Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), marine pollution response, environmental protection, fighting transnational maritime crimes, sharing information, enhancing maritime domain awareness, capacity building, training, and technical support.

This move signals India’s growing role in global maritime security and sets the stage for meaningful discussions on pressing ocean-related issues.
