India, UK natural partners; strong ties pillar for global stability, economic progress, says PM Modi (Ld)

In Mumbai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the visiting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Raj Bhavan on Thursday. Modi said the India‑UK partnership is a key pillar of global stability and economic progress, especially in these uncertain times. He emphasized that New Delhi backs all talks aimed at ending the Ukraine war and the Gaza conflict, stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

After the meeting, Modi outlined priorities for both countries. He highlighted plans to strengthen maritime security in the Indo‑Pacific and stressed that India and the UK share core values—democracy, freedom and the rule of law. “In a world of growing instability, our relationship keeps the world on track,” Modi said.

Modi also praised the 1.8 million Indians living in the UK, calling them a living bridge that ties the two nations together. Their contributions to British society and the economy deepen the friendship. “India’s dynamism plus the UK’s expertise make for a powerful partnership,” he added.

New agreements were announced during the visit. A military‑training exchange will see Indian Air Force instructors train UK Royal Air Force crews. From the education side, nine UK universities will open campuses in India, with Southampton University already launching its Gurugram campus and enrolling students.

The leaders also agreed to create an Industry Guild and a Supply Chain Observatory focused on critical minerals, with a satellite hub at ISM Dhanbad.

Modi recapped progress under Starmer’s leadership. He referenced the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) signed in July and praised the large business delegation visiting India last month, calling it a sign of the partnership’s renewed vigor and broader vision.

The meeting underscored India’s keen interest in deepening ties with the UK across defence, education, trade and technology, marking a new chapter in a relationship built on shared values and mutual benefit.
