The Indian Navy is gearing up to welcome its latest addition: the advanced warship Androth. This second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) will officially join the fleet on October 6 at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. The move comes as India keeps a close eye on China’s expanding presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, head of the Eastern Naval Command, will lead the commissioning ceremony. Androth is the second in a planned series of 16 such ships designed to boost the navy’s underwater defense game.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata crafted Androth, packing more than 80% indigenous parts into the vessel. It’s a prime example of India’s push for self-reliance, or ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ highlighting the country’s rising skills in building its own warships.
The ship rolled out under strict oversight from the Directorate of Ship Production and a dedicated Warship Overseeing Team in Kolkata. The navy took delivery on September 13, 2025. The name Androth nods to the scenic Androth Island in the Lakshadweep chain, signaling India’s dedication to protecting its expansive ocean borders.
This isn’t the first Androth to serve— the original INS Androth (P69) patrolled for over 27 years before retiring. The new version carries that proud tradition forward.
Packed with state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, communication tech, and speedy waterjet propulsion, Androth excels at spotting, following, and taking out submarine threats. It also handles key tasks like ocean patrols, search-and-rescue missions, and guarding coastlines against all kinds of dangers.
Bringing Androth online is a big win for India’s maritime security. It ramps up the navy’s anti-submarine warfare strength and shows the world’s how India designs and builds top-tier ships at home. These ASW-SWC vessels, created to Indian Register of Shipping standards at GRSE, also sharpen skills in coastal surveillance and mine deployment.
