Indian Railways operated over 43,000 special trains to clear festive & peak season rush in 2025

Indian Railways Runs Record 43,000+ Special Trains in 2025 to Ease Holiday Rush

New Delhi – In a move to keep travelers moving smoothly across the country during the busy 2025 festival and holiday periods, Indian Railways announced it ran more than 43,000 special train trips this year.

The ministry’s statement, released Friday, highlighted the railway’s ongoing effort to match rising passenger demand with seamless connectivity.

The 2025 schedule saw a substantial uptick in dedicated services. For the massive Maha Kumbh pilgrimage, 17,340 special trains were dispatched from 13 January to 28 February, a clear sign that planners stepped up to meet the crowd.

In the case of Holi, 1,144 special trips operated between 1 March and 22 March – almost twice as many as in 2024 – improving availability and reducing delays for festival‑season commuters.

During the summer vacation window from 1 April to 30 June, 12,417 “Summer Special” trips ran to keep services robust during peak travel months. The Chhath Puja period, spanning 1 October to 30 November, also expanded dramatically, with 12,383 special trains added—well above the 7,990 trips run in 2024.

These enhancements build on the foundation laid in the previous year. In early 2024, during the Aastha Special services between 30 January and 11 March, 326 special circular trains helped move pilgrims. Holi 2024 saw 604 special trips from 12 March to 2 April, while the summer season that year involved 12,919 specials. Chhath Puja 2024 had 7,990 trips scheduled between 1 October and 31 December.

According to the Ministry, the expanded special train operations underscore Indian Railways’ sustained focus on passenger comfort, efficient crowd handling, and reliable service during periods of high travel demand.
