In a talk for the 120th Annual Session of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Delhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said India’s parliamentary system is the best in the world. He urged citizens not to get discouraged by what some see as “parliamentary chaos.”
Rijiju explained that disruptions are a normal part of India’s vibrant democracy. “When opposition parties raise objections, we give them space and respect,” he said. “Adjudicates may be postponed, but that’s only when the opposition creates real ruckus. I welcome debate on important national issues.” He added that a parliament full of diverse views will naturally be lively.
The minister reminded people that despite occasional delays, Parliament still passes vital legislation. He cited the last monsoon session, where 14 crucial bills were moved forward after intense debate. “If the government has a majority, we must keep the country moving,” he said. “The bills will get passed.”
Rijiju also praised India’s Constitution, calling it the biggest and most intelligent in the world. He urged people, including those who feel the Constitution is small, to read it and understand its intentions. “Freedom of expression is a key feature of a democracy,” he said. “We can’t stop anyone from speaking their mind, and that is what makes our democracy strong.”
Overall, the minister’s message was clear: India’s parliamentary democracy works, even if it’s sometimes noisy. The disruptions don’t stop the Parliament from delivering on important bills.
