India’s wheeled armoured platform, a defence innovation, goes global

India’s advanced WhAP 8×8 combat vehicle is set for its first big export push, highlighting the country’s growing role in the global defense market. Designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and built by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), this next-generation wheeled armored platform combines high mobility, strong survivability, and flexible mission options to tackle tough terrains and combat scenarios.

As India’s first amphibious wheeled infantry combat vehicle, the WhAP 8×8 stands out with its tough monocoque hull that offers scalable protection against bullets and mines. It rolls on an independent suspension system and includes a central tire inflation setup, letting troops navigate everything from rough roads to water crossings with ease. A powerful engine drives it forward, and it can equip both manned and unmanned weapon stations, even anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) systems for frontline firepower.

The vehicle got the green light for production and export back in October 2019, marking a key win for India’s homegrown defense tech. That year, the Indian Army ordered 198 units to swap out old BRDM-2 scouts and boost mechanized infantry operations across varied landscapes. In the 2023 Republic Day parade, the public got a close look at its Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) version, complete with composite armor, a 30mm turret from the BMP-2, and top-notch blast protection. It comfortably seats 10 to 12 troops in a modular layout focused on safety and quick adaptations.

The WhAP 8×8 joined the Indian Army in 2022 and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in 2023, proving its reliability at home. Now, it’s going international. In 2024, Morocco signed on for 150 units, complete with a dedicated assembly line to meet their needs. This modular design shines here—it can switch roles as an infantry fighting vehicle, armored personnel carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, command post, mortar carrier, or even an ambulance. That versatility fits everything from intense battles to aid missions.

Tata Advanced Systems took a bold step by opening its first overseas defense manufacturing plant in Berrechid, Morocco. Spanning 20,000 square meters, this facility is the North African nation’s biggest defense production site and the first one set up abroad by an Indian private firm. It will start by supplying the Royal Moroccan Army, with eyes on exporting more to allies, especially in Africa.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh cut the ribbon alongside Moroccan leaders, calling it a shift from “Make in India” to “Make with Friends” and “Make for the World.” The project promises jobs, skill-building for locals, and stronger bonds between the two countries. Through the WhAP 8×8, India proves it can create, produce, and ship cutting-edge combat vehicles worldwide, solidifying its spot as a trusted defense partner on the global stage. This move advances India’s goals for self-reliance and teamwork in defense.
