Himachal Pradesh Monsoon Devastation: 394 Lives Lost in Rain and Road Accidents
Himachal Pradesh has faced a heartbreaking monsoon season this year, with heavy rains and disasters claiming 394 lives so far. Out of these, 221 people died in rain-related tragedies like landslides, flash floods, drownings, and collapsing houses. The remaining 173 fatalities came from road accidents, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).
The latest report from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) paints a grim picture of the Himachal Pradesh monsoon losses. Landslides alone took 48 lives, while flash floods killed 11 and cloudbursts claimed 17. Drowning incidents led to 38 deaths, and other causes included lightning strikes, electrocution, snake bites, fires, and falls in hilly areas.
The toll doesn’t stop at human lives. Around 455 people suffered injuries, and 41 are still missing across the state. Livestock has been hit hard too, with 2,086 cattle dead and nearly 26,955 poultry birds lost to floods and landslides.
Property damage from the Himachal Pradesh rains has been massive. SDMA data shows 1,576 houses fully destroyed and 29,041 partially damaged. Shops (544), cow sheds (859), huts (1,894), and other structures like cowsheds, ghats, and ghrats (4,058) also faced severe destruction due to rain-triggered calamities.
The financial impact of this monsoon disaster in Himachal Pradesh is staggering, totaling over Rs 4,467 crore. The Public Works Department (PWD) bore the biggest hit at more than Rs 2,718 crore, followed by the Jal Shakti Vibhag at Rs 1,386 crore and the Power Department at Rs 139 crore.
Districts like Mandi (37 deaths), Kangra (34), Kullu (31), and Chamba (23) saw the most rain-related fatalities. For road accidents, Chamba (22), Mandi (24), Shimla (20), and Solan (22) topped the list.
SDMA spokesperson highlighted that the state is dealing with widespread losses in lives, animals, homes, and infrastructure. Restoration teams are on the ground, but ongoing rains and landslides are delaying efforts.
To stay safe amid Himachal Pradesh weather alerts, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and skip unnecessary trips on risky hill roads, especially in high-risk areas like Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, and Shimla.
