New Delhi – Heavy rains in Darjeeling on Sunday sparked deadly landslides and a bridge collapse that left 13 people dead. The mud and water poured into the hills overnight, soaking roads and slumping slopes. Nine victims died when an iron bridge in Mirik fell, while four more were lost in separate slides near Sukhia.
India’s top leaders sent their condolences. Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan posted on X: “I am deeply anguished by the tragic loss of lives in the bridge mishap in Darjeeling following heavy rains and landslides. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.” President Droupadi Murmu echoed the sadness: “The tragic loss of lives due to heavy rain and landslides in Darjeeling, West Bengal, is distressing. I pray for the success of rescue and relief operations and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi added, “Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide all possible assistance.”
Tourism has been shut down in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and surrounding areas to keep stranded visitors safe. Hotels have told guests not to leave until the storm passes. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore has warned of very heavy rain in the Darjeeling district for the next two days, which could worsen the situation and delay rescue work.
The Indian authorities are on alert, coordinating relief and monitoring the weather as clouds continue to pour over North Bengal. The community and families of those affected look to the government for support as they grapple with the aftermath of the crashes and floods.
