International delegation comprising around 30 members meet Delhi Mayor

A group of about 30 official visitors from countries such as the Maldives and Nepal stopped by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on October 9. They met at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, the headquarters of the Delhi city government.

The visit was part of a study tour set up by the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA). Delegates were invited to learn how Delhi manages its large population—nearly 20 million people—and its municipal services.

Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh welcomed the international team. He said the MCD is one of Asia’s biggest urban local bodies and that the city is committed to better transparency and public participation. The mayor highlighted key solid‑waste programmes, such as source segregation, cleaner landfill practices, waste‑to‑energy projects and community outreach.

Other senior officials present included Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Pravesh Wahi, Deputy Committee Chair Sunder Singh and Commissioner Ashwini Kumar. The group got a look at Delhi’s town‑planning framework, the Master Plan, and the online system for building‑plan approvals.

During the briefing, officials explained the full cycle of Delhi’s solid‑waste system: how waste is generated, sorted at source and in the city, transported, and finally disposed of. They also shared how a landlocked megacity like Delhi faces extra challenges in keeping its streets clean.

Mayor Singh said he hoped the visit would give the delegation useful insights while also letting Delhi learn from other countries’ best practices. The MCD aims to keep evolving its governance and waste‑management methods, and the international study tour is a step toward that goal.
