Conflict spreads in tribal-dominated hilly region of Bangladesh, 3 killed

Violence erupted in Bangladesh’s tribal hill district of Khagrachari, leaving three indigenous people dead, according to a statement from the country’s home ministry. The clashes broke out on Sunday in Guimara Upazila, and tensions are still running high in the area. To keep things under control, the army and police have stepped in with heavy deployment.

The ministry shared its deep regret over the deadly attack by unknown assailants. It killed three hill tribe members and injured 13 army soldiers—including a major—along with three police officers, such as the officer in charge at Guimara Police Station, and several others. “We won’t let anyone get away with this,” the ministry promised, vowing quick legal action once investigators wrap up their work.

For now, officials are urging everyone involved to stay calm and patient amid the Bangladesh violence in Khagrachari.

Local reports point to the spark: an alleged rape of a tribal schoolgirl that ignited outrage. Students from the Jummu group took to the streets in protest, but things quickly turned ugly. Fights broke out between the tribal communities and Bengali residents, escalating the tribal conflict in Khagrachari.

In response, the Bangladesh government has banned all rallies and gatherings in the district to prevent more unrest.
