Bengaluru, Nov 10 – Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has ordered a top‑level review after a video surfaced showing suspected ISIS terrorist Zohaid Manna and other criminals using a mobile phone inside Bangalore Central Prison, the state’s highest‑security jail. The minister said the incident highlights a serious gap in jail security and warned that “ruthless measures” would follow if similar breaches happen again.
The minister spoke to reporters in the capital and said the government is re‑examining ways to stop these lapses. “Past suspensions and FIRs did not fix the problem,” Parameshwara said. “If incidents like this keep happening, we cannot call these prisons secure.” He added that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had already flagged the issue and that the matter is “being taken seriously.”
Parameshwara called a meeting with the ADGP (Prisons) and senior officials from major prisons in Belagavi, Shivamogga and Ballari. He said the meeting will focus on preventing further violations. “I am reviewing what must be done to avoid such lapses,” he told the press. “If officers fail to fulfill their duties, it is a lapse that jeopardises the safety of the jail.”
The video shows Manna, who was extradited from Dubai in 2023 on charges of radicalising youth for ISIS, handling a mobile phone with apparent ease. In the clip, he comments on prison security protocols, saying, “If the password is available, we will get caught.” The clip follows other footage that has raised alarms, showing inmates such as serial killer and rapist Umesh Reddy, actress Ranya Rao’s associate Tarun and a suspected terrorist using phones, listening to music and watching TV inside jail.
Parameshwara also directed the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner to take immediate action on the developments and said the government must treat the situation with utmost seriousness. “The opposition now has grounds to question the government, and we must not let our responsibilities slip,” he insisted.
