Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah Hails Supreme Court Move on Waqf Amendment Act

In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed a key decision by the Supreme Court on the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. Speaking to reporters on Monday, he pointed out that the law seems to target people of one religion, and he’s glad the court sees it too.

Omar Abdullah called the court’s ruling a positive step. The Supreme Court refused to block the entire Waqf Amendment Act but paused some controversial provisions until it fully reviews challenges to its constitutionality. A bench led by Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih noted that certain sections need protection for now. "We’ve been saying this bill targets one community," the CM said. "It’s good the Supreme Court gets it. Now, let’s highlight and fix the other problematic parts."

This comes amid ongoing debates about the Waqf Amendment Act in India, which aims to reform how Muslim charitable properties are managed but has drawn criticism for potentially infringing on religious rights.

Call to Drop PSA Case Against AAP MLA Mehraj Malik

Omar Abdullah also urged authorities to drop the Public Safety Act (PSA) case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik and release him immediately. Malik, who represents the Doda constituency in Jammu and Kashmir, faces charges under the tough PSA law. He was booked on September 8 for activities seen as harmful to public order.

The PSA, a preventive detention law in Jammu and Kashmir, lets officials hold people without trial for up to two years in some cases. "Withdraw the PSA case against him and free Mehraj Malik as soon as possible," the Chief Minister demanded, showing his support for the AAP leader.

Push to Reopen Kashmir Highway and Boost Rail Services

On another front, Omar Abdullah addressed frequent highway closures in the Kashmir Valley. He made it clear that the Jammu-Srinagar national highway falls under central government control, not his state administration. "If it was up to me, I’d open it right away," he said.

The CM plans to reach out to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to push for quick restoration. He also called on the Railway Minister to run more trains from the region. "This highway is under the Indian government’s watch. I’ll talk to Gadkari ji to get it fixed and reopened. And to the Railway Minister: please add more trains here," Abdullah added.

These comments highlight ongoing infrastructure challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, where roadblocks often disrupt daily life and travel. Stay tuned for updates on the Waqf Amendment Act, PSA cases, and highway developments in the region.
