Land Subsidence Causes Panic in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban District

In the Tanger area of Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir, several houses have developed deep cracks due to land subsidence. Heavy rains over the past few days have worsened the situation, leaving locals worried about their safety.

Local authorities quickly stepped in and declared the area unsafe. They urged residents to evacuate right away and move to temporary shelters. Ramban MLA Arjun Singh Raju, along with the Deputy Commissioner and District Development Council (DDC) officials, visited the spot to check the damage. They promised full government support, including relocation to safer places and compensation for those hit by the land subsidence.

Talking to , MLA Raju shared, "There’s a lot of panic here. Last night, we got calls saying the ground was sinking. By morning, reports showed subsidence of 1 to 1.5 feet, with cracks in 20-25 houses. We’ve inspected everything. Don’t worry, residents—the government will handle all arrangements. We’ll shift you to secure locations soon."

This isn’t an isolated incident in the region. Jammu and Kashmir has seen nonstop heavy rainfall recently, causing rivers to swell and flash flood-like conditions in many districts. The area also sits in a high-risk seismic zone. Most of the Kashmir Valley falls under Seismic Zone 5, where strong earthquakes are a real threat, making land subsidence and landslides more common.

Just a day earlier, in Poonch district’s Mendhar sector, officials started moving families from Kalaban village. Continuous landslides there, triggered by land drift, have damaged over 25 homes and affected nearly 70 families since last Saturday.

As rescue and relief efforts continue, authorities are keeping a close watch to prevent further risks from heavy rains and seismic activity in Jammu and Kashmir. Residents are advised to stay alert and follow evacuation guidelines for safety.
