Mysterious Death of Jadavpur University Student Sparks Outrage in Kolkata
A shocking incident has rocked Kolkata’s Jadavpur University (JU), where the body of a third-year English Literature student turned up beside a campus water body late Thursday night. The mysterious circumstances surrounding her death have left everyone stunned, raising serious questions about campus safety and security.
The student, whose identity hasn’t been revealed yet, was found around 10 p.m. At that very time, a cultural programme organized by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI)—the student wing of CPI(M)—was in full swing on the JU campus. Organizers quickly halted the event once news of the discovery spread, but people are now asking: Who allowed such a late-night gathering without proper oversight?
Rescue teams rushed the body to nearby K.P.C. Medical College & Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police have sent the body for a post-mortem to figure out exactly what happened. Investigators are digging into why the student ended up at that isolated spot near the water body—did someone lure her there, or did she go on her own? The area was deserted, and the ongoing event’s loud music and dancing likely drowned out any cries for help, according to a university insider.
"We had microphones blaring, and everyone was caught up in the singing and dancing. Even if she called out, no one would have heard," the insider told reporters.
The tragedy has ignited a fierce blame game between student groups. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the youth arm of the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, slammed JU authorities for poor internal security. TMCP state president Trinankur Bhattacharya demanded accountability on Friday, pointing to the university’s long vacancy for a permanent vice-chancellor. "Anti-social activities happen unchecked late at night on the Jadavpur University campus," he said. "We’ve pushed for CCTV cameras and permanent police posts for ages. Those opposing them can’t escape blame for this unnatural death."
In response, SFI national general secretary Srijan Bhattacharya hit back, calling TMCP’s comments insensitive and politically motivated. "We’re devastated by this loss," he said. "Only Trinamool would politicize such a tragedy right now. Remember R.G. Kar Medical College? They had CCTV, but it didn’t stop the rape and murder of a junior doctor. Same at Kasba Law College—cameras were there, yet a student was assaulted. Were Leftist students behind those horrors?"
As the Jadavpur University death investigation unfolds, calls for better campus security in Kolkata are growing louder. Police continue their probe, and the post-mortem results could reveal more about this heartbreaking case. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
