Jaipur – December 3 (LatestNewsX) – A woman who was set on fire by her own family in Jaipur’s Dudu neighbourhood has also died from her burns. She was being treated at Sawai Man Singh Hospital (SMS) when her boyfriend passed away on Monday night.
The attack happened at about 2 a.m. on November 28. Family members reportedly poured petrol on the couple and lit them. The victims were Kailash Gurjar, 25, and Soni, 30, both from Barolav village in the Mokhampura area. They were on a farm platform when the assault took place.
Police say that Soni’s uncle‑in‑law, Birdi Chand, and her brother‑in‑law, Ganesh Gurjar, confronted the pair, drenched them in petrol and ignited them. Both suffered severe burns – 70 % for Kailash and 90 % for Soni – and were rushed to the ICU burn ward at SMS Hospital. Kailash died late on Monday evening, and Soni succumbed around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.
Station in‑charge Suresh Kumar Gurjar of Mokhampura Police Station confirmed that the police had first registered a case of attempted murder. After the deaths, the charge was upgraded to murder. Within 12 hours of the incident, a police team under Dudu ASP Shivlal Bairwa and DSP Deepak Khandelwal arrested the two accused, Birdi Chand and Ganesh Gurjar.
Soni’s family says more people were involved and is demanding additional arrests. Before she died, Soni told the police that she had gone to meet Kailash at around 2 a.m. on Friday. The accused allegedly followed her, tied the couple to a scaffold and set them on fire using petrol. The couple had been in a relationship despite family disputes. Kailash was married; Soni was a widow whose husband died six years earlier. She left behind two children, a 10‑year‑old son and a seven‑year‑old daughter—both of whom reportedly were married off at a young age.
Investigators point to rising tensions between the families after a love marriage last year involving Soni’s brother‑in‑law’s son and a daughter of Kailash’s brother. The marriage sparked bitterness and a breakdown in communication. Following Kailash’s death, villagers blocked the Mokhampura‑Bichoon road on Tuesday, demanding that authorities act swiftly and arrest all suspects. The police engaged with the protesters and promised further action.
