Assam Rifles pays tribute to 1968 Mizoram operation heroes in Manipur

On Saturday, a quiet yet powerful service took place in Manipur’s Chandel district. The Assam Rifles – the “Sentinels of the Northeast” – laid wreaths to honor three riflemen who made the ultimate sacrifice during a 1968 counter‑insurgency raid in Mizoram.

The ceremony, held at Sehlon village, remembered Rifleman Bhuwa Thapa, Rifleman Neraman Chandra Koch, and Rifleman Budhirman Tamang. They all died in the face of a fierce attack by insurgents at a suspected Mizo National Front camp. The raid, launched on November 5, 1968, had high‑risk objectives but ended with the insurgent camp abandoned. Unfortunately, the success cost the lives of the three brave soldiers, whose courage helped secure a major tactical victory for India’s forces in a turbulent period.

Around a hundred troops gathered to offer floral tributes and a guard of honour. A senior officer led the wreath‑laying, then recounted the soldiers’ bravery, inspiring pride among the men and women present. The speech underscored how remembering these heroes keeps the Assam Rifles’ tradition of duty, courage, and self‑less service alive.

The Assam Rifles routinely patrols the northeastern frontier, managing borders and fighting insurgency. Memorials such as this remind the unit of its mission and reinforce its commitment to protect India’s peace and stability.
