Jammu flood: Tawi, Chenab cross danger levels as heavy rainfall continues

Heavy rains flood rivers and disrupt travel in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing heavy rainfall that has caused flooding in many rivers and streams across the region. The water levels in major rivers like the Tawi, Chenab, Basantar, and Ujh have risen above the flood alert mark, prompting authorities to take safety measures. In Jammu city, loudspeakers have been used to warn residents about rising water levels and potential floods.

Since Tuesday evening, rainfall has been intense. Jammu received 81mm of rain, while Reasi got a whopping 203mm. Other areas like Katra, Ramban, Batote, Doda, and Banihal also saw heavy showers. The rainfall data shows how widespread and heavy the downpour has been, with some regions receiving nearly 200mm of rain in just a few hours.

Because of the heavy rains, all schools, colleges, and coaching centers in Jammu have been shut for the day to keep students and staff safe. Several key roads, including the Srinagar-Jammu highway, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Top, are closed to traffic to prevent accidents.

Water levels in the Tawi River have crossed dangerous points, especially in Udhampur and Jammu city, where flood alerts have been issued. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on duty at the Tawi Bridge, warning people about the rising water.

The Chenab River at Akhnoor is also near the flood level, with water almost reaching evacuation levels. Similarly, the Basantar River in Samba and the Ujh River in Kathua have crossed their respective flood marks, causing concern for nearby residents.

In the Kashmir Valley, streams like the Sheshnag in Pahalgam and Vishow in Kulgam have also risen past flood levels. However, the Jhelum River at Sangam in Anantnag and Srinagar’s Ram Munshi Bagh remains below critical levels, providing some relief.

Unfortunately, heavy rains have triggered landslides and falling rocks, blocking the Jammu-Srinagar highway. The traffic department has advised travelers to avoid this route until conditions improve for safety.

The Meteorological Department has warned that the region could see more heavy to very heavy rain over the next 12 hours, especially in areas like Reasi, Doda, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, and Pir Panjal range. There is also a risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in some vulnerable spots, so people are urged to stay alert and keep informed about weather updates.

Stay safe during these heavy rains and follow official advisories to avoid any danger.
