Police in Srinagar recovered an AK‑47 rifle from a doctor’s locker at Government Medical College in Anantnag on Saturday. The weapon was seized at the college after a joint operation with the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Anantnag.
The doctor, identified as Adeel Ahmad Rather, is the son of Abdul Majeed Rather and works in Qazigund. He had been a senior resident at GMC Anantnag until October 24, 2024. An AK‑47 was found in his personal locker, prompting the immediate arrest.
Srinagar Police say the doctor and the rifle are now in their custody. A file has been filed under the Arms Act (sections 7 and 25) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (sections 13, 28, 38, and 39). Investigation is being carried out by both local police and JIC officials, who are questioning the doctor to uncover how the weapon entered the college and to identify any links to extremist groups.
The police are keeping the investigation active, tracing any connections and pursuing all legal angles. Meanwhile, the region remains under a broad anti‑terrorist campaign targeting attackers, their support networks, and sympathisers.
