Jammu, Dec 2 – Surinder Choudhary, the Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister, has filed a defamation case in the Delhi High Court to have content online that allegedly portrays him in a bad light—suggesting a sexual relationship—removed. The material spread widely, prompting state authorities to reassess how digital media and independent reporting are monitored after the issue was brought up in the Assembly.
Choudhary, a National Conference legislator, is seeking a permanent injunction to stop the circulation of the defamatory posts on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Justice Amit Bansal heard the case briefly on Tuesday and noted major shortcomings in the petition. No excerpts or transcripts of the videos were provided, making it impossible for the court to confirm the alleged libel or understand its content. The judge expressed confusion over how any judgement could be reached without the necessary evidence.
Counsel for the Deputy Chief Minister argued that most of the offending material is nearly two years old and that many links actually belong to news outlets re‑posting the content. Accordingly, the court ordered Choudhary to submit detailed transcripts of the videos and recordings cited. The next hearing is set for January 13, 2026.
The court also directed Google LLC and Meta Platforms to furnish information about the Facebook pages and YouTube channels responsible for uploading the disputed material, enabling Choudhary to bring them into the lawsuit.
In the 2024 state election, Choudhary defeated BJP’s then‑J&K president Ravinder Raina in the Nowshera Assembly constituency by 7,819 votes, securing 27,250 votes himself.
