The Ghatshila Assembly seat in Jharkhand saw a clear win for the ruling JMM party. Somesh Chandra Soren, the JMM candidate, beat BJP’s Babulal Soren by a huge 38,524‑vote margin.
Soren finished with 104,794 votes, while Babulal managed 66,270. Every one of the other 11 candidates lost their deposit.
The by‑poll was triggered when JMM MLA Ramdas Soren passed away. The party chose his son, Somesh, to keep the family’s political legacy alive. BJP selected Babulal, the son of former chief minister Champai Soren, turning the contest into a symbolic clash between the two Soren families that once started in the JMM.
After Hemant Soren stepped down as chief minister last year, Champai Soren left the JMM for the BJP – a move that set up a heated battle in Ghatshila. The JMM camped on the late Ramdas Soren’s legacy and the achievements of Hemant Soren’s government, while the BJP leaned on Champai’s local influence and its own organisational strength.
JMM’s general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said the results show “Jharkhand’s soil has once again rejected the BJP.” He added that Champai Soren’s rise has not translated into wide‑ranging appeal outside the party.
Out of 13 candidates, the fight mainly pitted JMM against BJP. JLKM’s Ramdas Murmu got 11,542 votes. The election was held on November 11 and drew a strong turnout of 73.88 %.
