In Agartala, Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha spoke about the role of journalists on Sunday at the National Press Day event held at Sukanta Academy. He said the job of reporters is to keep society’s pulse visible and to foster political, social and cultural harmony.
Saha reminded the press that sharing accurate news is an art. While journalism is a profession, he urged reporters to see it as a duty to the community. This year’s National Press Day theme, “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation,” resonated with his talk.
The CM, who also manages the Information and Cultural Affairs department, praised newspapers and journalists for strengthening democracy. He noted that free speech and press freedom are essential, but journalists must stay alert and responsible, especially as misinformation spreads on social media. “Tripura journalists match the quality of those in other states,” Saha said.
He called on senior reporters to host monthly workshops, helping young media workers sharpen their skills and uphold ethical standards. Citing the recent tragic murders of two local journalists, Saha assured that justice is underway and that the state remains committed to the safety and dignity of the press. Committees set up by the ICA Department will implement welfare recommendations in stages.
Attendees included Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, Executive Editor Manas Pal, Editor Sanit Debroy, ICA Secretary Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty and ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee. Two seasoned reporters, Pranamay Saha and Anupam Bhattacharjee, received shawls, mementos and honorariums.
