Bridgetown, Barbados – On October 11, Lok Shoor Speaker Om Birla reminded world leaders that India has been a living example of democracy for 75 years. He spoke at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference’s General Assembly, where the theme was The Commonwealth – A Global Partner.
India’s democratic values shine
Birla said democracy is at the heart of India, while equality and justice shape its identity. “India’s Constitution, like a guiding light, keeps us all together,” he added. He praised the nation’s commitment to treating health and food as rights, not privileges.
Tackling global challenges together
The speaker highlighted that issues such as climate change, pandemics, food shortages and inequality cross borders. He urged countries to join forces, saying no single nation can solve these problems alone.
From food insecurity to vaccine leader
Once reliant on imports, India now supplies medicine and COVID‑19 vaccines to more than 150 countries. Birla celebrated this progress, stressing that every person deserves access to healthy living and that technology can help deliver it.
Women and youth at the centre
Birla cited India’s strong record of empowering women. Over 1.4 million women now hold elected positions in rural local bodies, and a one‑third seat reservation for women has been enacted for Parliament and state legislatures through the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.
AI, technology and democracy
He warned that technology, especially artificial intelligence, must benefit all people, not just a few. “Let’s set global standards that drive innovation while protecting society,” Birla urged.
Success in climate action
India is the world’s largest democracy and the fastest‑growing major economy. The country hit Paris Agreement targets ahead of schedule and leads initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster‑Resilient Infrastructure.
A nod to India’s ancient democratic roots
Birla spoke of India’s deep heritage of dialogue, consensus and village councils—values that have helped shape the nation’s democratic culture. He referenced the mantra Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning “the world is one family,” as a guiding principle.
Commonwealth unity
The speaker notes that despite language, tradition and geography, Commonwealth members share democracy, freedom and human dignity. “We are more than a group of nations; we are a family bound by history and shared goals,” Birla added.
Invitation to New Delhi
Birla concluded by inviting all Commonwealth Parliament presiding officers to the next Commonwealth Leaders’ Parliamentary Summit (CSPOC) in New Delhi, January 7‑9, 2026, where India will host a session on global cooperation.
