NYU prof congratulated Jeffrey Epstein on wealth days after he was accused of sex crimes, docs reveal
A former NYU professor has sent a surprisingly positive note to Jeffrey Epstein, according to documents the Department of Justice released last year.
The email, dated January 5, 2015, appears in DOJ files as an attachment sent from a James B. Rosenwald, III—an adjunct professor at the Stern School of Business who joined NYU in 2012. Rosenwald says he met Epstein back in the mid‑1970s; the financier was a 21‑year‑old teacher at the Upper East Side’s Dalton School, where Epstein taught physics from 1974 to 1976.
In the letter Rosenwald writes in a familiar style: “Your name popped up again in the Press and I thought it was time to congratulate you on your wonderful financial successes since your days as my Physics prof at Dalton!!” The note continues to mention a Thanksgiving toast in Amagansett the prior November and ends with: “Ps. David Asch and I toasted to you during our Thanksgiving weekend in Amagansett in November.” The email does not receive a response, and the last line of Rosenwald’s note is an email to Epstein that fails to get through.
Rosenwald is listed as chief investment officer and co‑founder of the Dalton Global Opportunity fund on his LinkedIn profile. He teaches at NYU, but he did not reply to requests for comment about the email.
Epstein’s notoriety grew when, in 2015, two anonymous women—including Virginia Giuffre—filed high‑profile Florida court documents alleging he had forced them to have sex with England’s Prince Andrew while they were minors between 1999 and 2002. Those allegations added to the growing scrutiny that ultimately led to Epstein’s federal indictment and his death on August 10, 2019, while in custody.
Epstein, a Cooper Union dropout, began his teaching career at Dalton at just 21, hired by then‑school headmaster Donald Barr—father of former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr. The circumstances surrounding his suicide in federal lockup remain the subject of ongoing investigations and public speculation.
