Bengaluru – The BJP marked the 150th birthday of the iconic Indian patriotic song “Vande Mataram” with a lively public singing event at its state office, Jagannath Bhavan, on Friday morning. The party said that the Congress has long tried to undermine the song since India gained independence.
The gathering drew top BJP leaders, including state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, former deputy chief minister and MP Govind Karjol, and opposition leader Chalawadi Narayanaswamy. They were joined by state vice‑president Malavika Avinash, other office bearers and active party workers.
Before the local ceremony, Vijayendra watched Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s televised launch of a year‑long “Vande Mataram” celebration in New Delhi. Modi’s program aims to inspire young Indians and push the country toward development by 2047.
In his address, Vijayendra reminded the crowd that the song, written by Bankimchandra Chatterjee in 1875 and first performed publicly by Rabindranath Tagore in 1896, played a key role in rallying Indians against British rule. He said that then‑President Dr. Rajendra Prasad gave “Vande Mataram” equal status with the national anthem in 1950.
The BJP leader accused the Congress of a long‑running conspiracy against the song, arguing that it has always been a threat to the spirit of patriotism. He urged every Indian to recognize the song as a symbol of unity, integrity, and national strength.
The event underscored the BJP’s focus on patriotic symbols and the party’s plan to use “Vande Mataram” to unite the nation and drive India toward its 2047 development goals.
