Karnataka Congress leaders face party notices over talk of DK Shivakumar’s potential rise to Chief Minister
In Bengaluru, the Karnataka Congress has cracked down on two of its own members for stirring up speculation about a leadership change in the state government. On Thursday, the party’s Disciplinary Committee sent show-cause notices to former MP LR Shivarame Gowda and Tumkur MLA HD Ranganath, asking them to explain their recent comments predicting that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar could soon take over as Chief Minister.
The trouble started when Gowda spoke to the media on Wednesday, claiming there’s “no doubt” Shivakumar will become the next Chief Minister. He even mentioned that the party’s high command has assured leaders like Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar two and a half years each in the top job, with a decision expected in November. But the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) wasn’t happy. They called his remarks “unruly” and a clear violation of party discipline, especially since the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had already warned members to stay quiet on the issue to avoid confusion.
“Your statements embarrass the party and break our rules,” the notice to Gowda read. It demands a response within one week.
Ranganath got a similar notice for his praise of Shivakumar, whom he called his “political guru” and expressed a desire to see him in the Chief Minister’s chair. The MLA also hailed Shivakumar as a “rising star” and a potential pan-India leader, adding fuel to the rumors.
This all comes amid growing buzz about a possible power shift in Karnataka’s Congress government. Shivakumar himself stepped in to shut down the chatter, telling reporters he had ordered KPCC Working President GC Chandrashekar to issue these notices. “We don’t need to react to what the BJP says—let them talk,” Shivakumar said. “No one should discuss the Chief Minister post. Siddaramaiah and I are working together, following the high command’s guidelines.”
The moves highlight tensions within the Karnataka Congress as it tries to keep internal discussions under wraps while focusing on governance and countering opposition attacks from the BJP. Party insiders say staying united is key ahead of upcoming decisions.
