Anna Kepner’s insomniac stepbrother says he doesn’t remember anything about the night she was fatally strangled on cruise
Stepbrother of 18‑year‑old Anna Kepner denies knowing what happened on Carnival cruise
The FBI is treating a 16‑year‑old’s account as the main lead in the investigation into the death of Anna Kepner, who was found dead in her cabin last month while the family was on a Carnival cruise ship. Anna, 18, was strangled to death, and her death certificate—obtained by ABC News—states the cause was “mechanical asphyxia” inflicted by another person.
The unnamed teen, Anna’s stepbrother, says he has no memory of the night in question. In a series of text messages to his parents, Shauntel Hudson‑Kepner and Thomas Kepner, he repeats that he can’t recall what happened. Local media have reported that he claims he did not take his medication—which he sometimes forgets—because he was an insomniac.
The 18‑year‑old shared a cabin with the boy and their 14‑year‑old brother. Anna’s younger brother heard “yelling” coming from the cabin that night before she was locked inside.
The case remains under FBI investigation and the family continues to navigate an incredibly difficult time.
