V-P Radhakrishnan highlights CAG’s global standing as external auditor for WHO & ILO (Lead)

Vice‑President C.P. Radhakrishnan said on Sunday that India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) is now a respected name worldwide. He highlighted the CAG’s growing role as the external auditor for big bodies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

During the fifth “Audit Diwas” ceremony in New Delhi, the Vice‑President pointed out that the CAG currently chairs the Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (ASOSAI) and the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) Committee, including the Working Group on IT Audit. “This shows that Bharat has moved from a follower to a global leader in auditing standards,” he said.

Radhakrishnan called the CAG the “guardian of the public purse.” He praised its 165‑year track record, noting that the office of Auditor General has existed since 1860. The CAG’s mission is simple: protect public money and promote good governance.

The Vice‑President applauded a sweeping reform that introduced “One Nation, One Set of Object Heads of Expenditure” for both Union and state governments. The change will make government spending more transparent and easier to compare across the country.

He also celebrated India’s advances in artificial intelligence (AI), big data, blockchain, and machine learning. The CAG now incorporates these technologies into public financial management through initiatives such as the One Indian Audit and Accounts Department (IAAD) One System and AI‑based audit frameworks.

“Working with top institutions like IIT Madras, the CAG is building capacity in data science, cybersecurity and deep learning,” Radhakrishnan said. “We’re also developing a customised large‑language model to handle more than 20,000 inspection reports each year, making our audits faster and more data‑driven.”

Technology will improve risk detection, boost efficiency, and keep public funds used wisely, the Vice‑President added. He urged all civil servants to keep sharpening their skills and keeping public welfare front and center.

The event drew senior officials, including CAG K. Sanjay Murthy, Deputy CAGs Subir Mallick and Krishnan Sagaran Subramanian, retired CAG Jayant Sinha, and representatives from the Indian Audit and Accounts Service.
