Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy shared his deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed 39 lives and injured 95 others. In a statement released Saturday, Rangasamy said he felt shocked and saddened by the news. He offered heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for a quick recovery for those still in the hospital.
The chaos broke out during a rally organized by Tamil Nadu Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay on September 27. Crowds surged, leading to the deadly incident that has gripped the region.
Puducherry’s local Congress leaders echoed the grief. Pradesh Congress Committee chief and MP V Vaithilingam called the event a source of “great shock and deep mental anguish.” He highlighted how more than 50 people, including three children, ended up in hospitals after fainting in the crush. On behalf of the committee, Vaithilingam extended condolences and wished speedy healing for the injured.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary P Senthil Kumar provided the latest update to reporters. He confirmed 39 deaths and said all 95 injured patients are receiving care. Of those, 51 are at the Government Medical College and Hospital, with specialized doctors on hand—only one remains in critical condition, but the rest are stable. The other 44 are in private hospitals.
In response, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has set up a one-man commission to investigate the Karur stampede causes. State police have also filed a case to probe the tragedy.
