Kerala BJP Councilor K. Anilkumar’s suicide note blames isolation, financial crisis
In Thiruvananthapuram, a prominent BJP leader and local councilor named K. Anilkumar shocked the community by taking his own life in his office on Saturday. Authorities discovered him hanging there, along with a suicide note that laid bare his struggles.
Anilkumar, who also ran the Valyashala Farm Tour Society, wrote about feeling completely abandoned amid a tough financial crisis. He pointed out that despite his lifelong efforts to help others, no one stepped up for him when times got hard. The cooperative, he noted, carried about Rs 6 crore in debts but held assets worth Rs 11 crore. He called on leaders to use those assets to pay back investors and stressed that neither he nor his family had pocketed any money for personal gain.
In the note, Anilkumar thanked his supporters and urged people not to blame his family. He didn’t hold back criticism of BJP leadership, claiming the party left him hanging—literally and figuratively—during the society’s money troubles.
A key figure in Thiruvananthapuram’s politics, Anilkumar had spearheaded many protests at the city corporation and district levels. His unexpected death has left the local political scene reeling, especially as BJP eyes gains in the upcoming Kerala local body elections.
BJP city president Karamana Jayan acknowledged the cooperative’s financial stress but firmly denied any wrongdoing or fund misappropriation. He insisted the party stood by Anilkumar until the end.
Tensions boiled over at the scene when BJP supporters clashed with journalists covering the story. Workers objected to the media presence, leading to arguments, threats against reporters, and even attempts to damage equipment. Police had to step in to calm things down.
As the main opposition in the 101-member Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, BJP has long accused the ruling CPI-M of corruption scandals. This tragedy hits hard right before polls, where the party hopes to flip control of the corporation.
