Kerala HC orders probe into discrepancies in Sabarimala temple’s gold plating project

Kerala High Court Orders Probe into 4kg Gold Missing from Sabarimala Temple Idols

In a major development at the famous Sabarimala temple in Kerala, the High Court has kicked off an investigation into missing gold from the temple’s sacred Dwarapalaka idols. These door guardian idols, covered in gold plating, lost about 4kg of gold during a repair job back in 2019, sparking serious questions about what went wrong.

The Kerala High Court in Kochi stepped in after spotting big discrepancies in the records. A Division Bench, led by Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V and Justice KV Jayakumar, reviewed a report from the Sabarimala Special Commissioner. The report flagged how the Travancore Devaswom Board quietly removed the gold-plated copper coverings from the idols for repairs without telling anyone in advance—not even the Special Commissioner or the court.

Here’s what happened: The Dwarapalaka idols date back to 1999. In 2019, sponsor Unnikrishnan Potti asked to re-plate the gold, so the items went to a firm called Smart Creations in Chennai. But when they came back, the gold weighed 4kg less than expected. No one could explain the shortfall, leading to this full probe.

The court has now tasked the Chief Vigilance and Security Officer—a Superintendent of Police with the Travancore Devaswom Board—to dig deep into the gold plating project and the alleged loss. They want a detailed inquiry to uncover the truth behind the missing gold from Sabarimala temple idols.

To make sure things move fast, the judges ordered the board to hand back certain registers submitted in court. The board must fully cooperate with the vigilance officer to get to the bottom of this Sabarimala gold controversy. The court stressed that everyone involved needs to help bring the facts to light.

In court, Senior Government Pleader S Rajmohan spoke for the state, while Standing Counsel G Biju represented the Travancore Devaswom Board. Advocate Sayujya Radhakrishnan acted as amicus curiae for the Sabarimala Special Commissioner, and Advocates R Sudhish and M Manju stood for Unnikrishnan Potti.

Devotees and temple authorities are watching closely as this probe unfolds. The Sabarimala temple, a major pilgrimage site, has faced its share of controversies, and this gold missing case adds another layer.
