Kerala: Mother Eliswa Vakayil declared ‘blessed’ at Vallarpadam Basilica

Ernakulam, Kerala – On Saturday, a large crowd gathered at the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom in Vallarpadam to watch the beatification of Mother Eliswa Vakayil. The ceremony celebrated the life of the nun who founded Kerala’s first women’s Carmelite community more than 150 years ago.
Mother Eliswa, born on October 15 1831 in Ochanthuruth, transformed a simple bamboo‑mat hut in Koonammavu into the first indigenous Carmelite convent for women in 1866. Her community grew into two major congregations: the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel, which follows the Syro‑Malabar rite, and the Congregation of the Teresian Carmelites, which follows the Latin rite. Her work opened new opportunities for education and social service for women inside the Church and helped bridge the Latin and Syrian rites at a time when such collaboration was rare.
The beatification ceremony welcomed thousands of devotees, clergy and representatives of various religious orders. Pope Francis’s representative also attended, honoring the pope’s earlier decisions. In 2023, Pope Francis declared Mother Eliswa “Venerable,” recognizing her heroic virtues, and later approved a miracle that paved the way for her beatification.
Mother Eliswa lost her husband at age 20 and devoted her life to prayer and service. She died on July 18 1913 and rests at St. Joseph’s Convent in Varapuzha. Her tomb has become a pilgrimage site for many who seek her intercession.
Her favorite motto, “God alone suffices,” continues to inspire generations of women in Kerala and beyond. By turning her deep faith into action, Mother Eliswa Vakayil left a lasting legacy for the Catholic community in India.
