Key treatment plant in TN’s Tirupppur nears completion to stop sewage flow into Nallaru River

Chennai, Nov 16 – A new sewage treatment plant in the Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu is on track to finish by the end of December. The facility, built by the Thirumuruganpoondi Municipality, will clean the river that runs through the area before untreated water can reach the Nallaru River.

The 10‑million‑litre‑per‑day plant sits on a government parcel next to the river and costs roughly ₹14.8 crore. The Nallaru, which starts in Coimbatore’s Annur, travels about 27 km before joining the Noyyal at Nanjarayan Lake. Once a clear freshwater source, the river has become a conduit for sewage due to unchecked dumping and encroachments.

Environmental activists and local groups have long urged authorities to stop the river’s decline. Although some worried that construction started without a No‑Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Water Resources Department (WRD), officials said the WRD is reviewing the request and will approve it soon. The plant is built on one acre of recovered municipal land, and the district government has already recommended that the municipality receive ownership of the site.

The project, part of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, will intercept sewage from eight major points on the river with pipelines, and it will also install on‑site sanitation sheds at seven other locations to treat water before it reaches the river. This dual‑approach aims to cut pollution dramatically and restore a healthier river ecosystem.

The construction, which began in March, has stayed on schedule. With the NOC approval pending, the last phase of the work can proceed. Once completed, the plant should keep the Nallaru from becoming another polluted waterway and help protect the surrounding environment in Tiruppur district.
