Kolkata Municipal Corporation doubles issuing of birth and death certificates to help citizens in Bengal SIR

Kolkata is speeding up the issuance of birth and death certificates as the city’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise rolls out.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has doubled the daily output from 150 to 300 certificates—150 birth and 150 death documents each day—to ease the surge of people lining up for the vital papers needed for voter registration.

The SIR exercise, part of the state’s electoral roll revision, has residents flocking to the KMC’s health department office. Long queues have been common for days as citizens rush to secure the certificates that allow them to register as voters.

Mayor Firhad Hakim has pledged quick action to meet the demand. “Many people are coming to our office for these documents,” an official said. “Because of the rush, we are now issuing 300 certificates daily instead of 150.”

The move comes as enumeration forms spread door‑to‑door, letting voters fill and submit information for the updated rolls. With the revised certificates now easier to obtain, Kolkata residents can quickly finalize their voter registration and stay part of the city’s democratic process.
