Nepal’s interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki shook up her cabinet on Sunday evening, recommending five new ministers to the president. This move comes just a week after her first expansion, which brought in four ministers including herself, boosting the Nepal interim government’s team.
Sources say Karki tapped Anil Kumar Sinha, a former Supreme Court justice, to handle three key roles: the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply; Law and Justice; and Land Reforms, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation. She’s a big name in Nepal’s legal circles, and this triple duty shows the government’s push to tackle economic and social challenges head-on.
Karki also picked Mahabir Pun, the renowned Magsaysay Award winner known for sparking innovation in Nepal, as the new minister for Education and Science and Technology. Pun leads the National Innovation Centre and has long championed research and development in the country.
For agriculture, she’s recommending Madan Prasad Pariyar, a senior expert on climate and farming. He heads the Samata Foundation, a nonprofit focused on social justice and inclusivity, and once coordinated Nepal’s high-level state restructuring commission.
Jagdish Kharel, a top media pro and editor at Image Channels who’s also head of news at Image Media Group, gets the nod for Information and Communications. And Sangeeta Mishra, who recently served as an additional secretary in the health ministry, steps up as the new health minister—perfect timing for Nepal’s ongoing healthcare needs.
The current lineup in Karki’s cabinet includes three holdovers: Rameshore Khanal on finance, Kulman Ghising handling energy, water resources, and irrigation, and Om Prakash Aryal leading home affairs.
In other Nepal government news, the interim administration formed a high-level commission on Sunday to investigate the deadly Gen Z uprising from two weeks ago. The protests turned violent, sparking killings, arson, and vandalism that led to major losses in lives and property. This probe aims to uncover what went wrong and help prevent future unrest.
