In Bengaluru, state leaders and farmers finally agreed on a new sugarcane price after a week‑long protest in Belagavi district.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Friday that the government will pay ₹3,300 per tonne of sugarcane. The decision comes after farmers and factory owners staged a peaceful sit‑in at Gurlapur Cross, Mudalagi taluk, to demand better prices.
BJP Karnataka president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra welcomed the move, calling it a win for farmers. He said the meeting, which involved the CM and several cabinet ministers, should have happened sooner—"the CM cancelled his schedule in Tumakuru just to meet farmers," Vijayendra told reporters. He also criticized other ministers for not visiting the protest site, arguing that his party stepped in to support the farmers five days after the agitation began.
The price hike includes a ₹50 per tonne subsidy from the state. Vijayendra explained that the government already earns about ₹30,000 crore a year from molasses, ethanol, and power generation, so the subsidy would cost just a fraction of that income—roughly ₹300 crore.
During the meeting, Rajya Sabha member Iraanna Kadadi was present. After a marathon seven‑hour discussion, Siddaramaiah held a press conference in Bengaluru, confirming the new rate and the split of the ₹50 contribution between the government and factory owners.
The move was welcomed by farmers in Belagavi, who celebrated with crackers. Both the government and factory owners will now contribute ₹50 each to ensure farmers receive the full ₹3,300 per tonne. The outcome is expected to ease tension in the region and stabilize the sugarcane market.
