GenZ protests in Nepal leave 77 dead, NPR 84 billion in damages: Report

Kathmandu, Dec 11 (LatestNewsX) — A recently‑published government report says that the GenZ protests in early September cost Nepal 77 lives and about NPR 84.45 billion in property damage. The damage assessment committee, set up to evaluate the September 8‑9 disturbances and outline a reconstruction strategy, filed its findings with Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday.
The Secretariat’s data show 20 people were killed on Sept 8, another 37 on Sept 9, and an additional 20 in the days that followed, for a cumulative death toll of 77. On Sept 9 the country saw widespread destruction of public and private assets after police shot at GenZ demonstrators the day before.
Led by National Planning Commission Secretary Ravilal Pantha, the committee reported that 2 429 people injured nationwide, including 17 under 13 and 1 433 between 13 and 28. The unrest affected 54 of the 77 districts and 262 local governments, contributing to the fall of the KP Sharma Oli‑led administration and the rise of Karki’s current government.
When it comes to infrastructure, government property worth NPR 44.93 billion was ruined, while private losses were estimated at NPR 33.54 billion. Key government sites, such as those in Singha Durbar, a main hub of Nepal’s administrative functions, were set alight. Several prominent commercial venues—store outlets of Bhatbhateni Departmental Store (the country’s largest retail chain), Hotel Hilton Kathmandu, Hyatt Regency Kathmandu, and the Chaudhary Group warehouse owned by billionaire Binod Chaudhary—suffered heavy fire damage.
Overall, 2 671 buildings sustained damage with total losses around NPR 39.31 billion, and 12 659 vehicles were affected, costing about NPR 12.93 billion. Community and other sectors absorbed about NPR 5.97 billion in damages. Of the government‑sector losses, the federal level accounted for 68 %, provincial authorities 10 %, and local governments 22 %.
