Jamie Lee Curtis thanks her mom for not letting her audition for ‘The Exorcist’ when she was 12

Hollywood actress Jamie Lee Curtis recently took to “The Drew Barrymore Show” to talk about a pivotal moment in her youth that shaped her career. She revealed that her mother, legendary actress Janet Leigh, once turned down a major opportunity that would have placed her then‑12‑year‑old daughter in the infamous horror film “The Exorcist.”

According to Curtis, a producer approached Leigh and asked, “I’m producing the movie of the book ‘The Exorcist’. Will you let Jamie audition for it?” The young Curtis, who was “cute and kind of sassy” at the time, had already caught the eye of moviegoers, but Leigh said “No.” Curtis said her mother’s decision was motivated by a desire to protect her from early fame and the emotional toll of starring in a film she considered “one of the scariest movies ever made.”

“I’m grateful my mom wanted me to have a childhood,” Curtis told the host. “I understand you didn’t get that option.”

The discussion also touched on Barrymore’s own background. She made her debut in 1977 as a seven‑year‑old in “E.T. the Extra‑Terrestrial,” and the screen later cast Linda Blair in the role of the possessed child Regan. Blair’s performance earned her a 1974 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Curtis’s own career firmly established her as a horror icon after her breakout role as Laurie Strode in “Halloween” (1978). Over the decades she went on to star in cult classics such as “The Fog,” “Prom Night,” and “Terror Train,” and she returned to the Laurie Strode character in the 2022 sequel “Halloween Ends.”
