Tezpur University appoints pro-VC amid campus turmoil; students intensify protest

Guwahati, Dec 4 (LatestNewsX) – Tezpur University saw another wave of protest after its Board of Management named Junior Professor Dr. Joya Chakraborty the new Pro‑Vice Chancellor on Thursday night. Students, who have been striking for months over what they see as a corrupt administration, reacted instantly and harshly to the appointment.

The move, announced while the Vice‑Chancellor’s position itself remains a source of controversy, was denounced by campus groups as a bid to cement the current leadership’s grip on the university. Protesters say that Dr. Chakraborty is closely aligned with Vice‑Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, who has reportedly gone into hiding after accusations of corruption, favoritism and administrative negligence.

Students argue that appointing a Pro‑Vice Chancellor only sidesteps their core demand for a transparent, independent leadership. “We want a Vice‑Chancellor, not a Pro‑Vice Chancellor,” they shouted, warning that the decision would likely spark more demonstrations instead of restoring order on campus.

For more than two months, Tezpur University has been the epicenter of a sustained campus agitation that includes sit‑ins, rallies, and boycotts of official activities. Groups have repeatedly begged the Union government to step in and enforce corrective measures. Student leaders also pointed out that Dr. Chakraborty has neither shown support for nor taken part in any of the protests, raising questions about her neutrality.

The controversy erupted a day after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on the situation, saying he had spoken to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The Chief Minister claimed he urged the Centre to appoint a Pro‑Vice Chancellor to keep academic affairs running while an impartial inquiry into the Vice‑Chancellor’s conduct took place.

“I spoke with Hon’ble Union Minister of Education Shri @dpradhanbjp today regarding the present situation at Tezpur University. I urged the Hon’ble Minister to appoint a Pro‑Vice Chancellor immediately, pending an impartial enquiry into the conduct of the present Vice Chancellor, so that academic stability is maintained. I am confident that with the support of the Hon’ble Minister, the issues will be resolved at the earliest,” Sarma posted on X.
