Late Haryana IPS officer’s family has not given consent yet for Y Puran Kumar’s post-mortem examination: Police Sources

In Chandigarh on October 7, senior police officer Y Puran Kumar died under mysterious circumstances, with family members stating he may have taken his own life. The police investigation has now focused on whether a post‑mortem can be done, as the officer’s relatives have not yet given permission for the examination of his body.
At the police station, Director General of Police Sagar Preet Hooda and Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar met with the family. Once the family consents, the body will be shown to them before a panel of doctors conducts the post‑mortem. The panel will be the only team authorized to carry out the examination.
To ensure a thorough and independent inquiry, Chandigarh Police have set up a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT). Led by IGP Pushpendra Kumar, the team also includes SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, SPICity KM Priyanka, DSP Charanyit Singh Vik, SOPO South Qujt Kaur, and SHO Jarveer Singh Rana. The SIT is investigating the case registered at Police Station Sector‑11 (West) under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. They may bring in additional experts to speed up evidence collection, witness interviews, and report writing.
Congress leader Harish Rawat has voiced his concerns about the officer’s death, calling the incident a stark reminder of growing intolerance in India. Rawat warned that narrow‑mindedness—whether based on religion, caste, or language—has crept into bureaucracy, and urged a broader conversation on how to address these issues. He also highlighted that the officer’s wife has filed an FIR in the matter.
The Haryana IAS Officers Association released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss of Y Puran Kumar. They praised his dedication to public service and his reputation for integrity. The association’s tribute serves as a reminder of the officer’s lasting impact on the community.
