In Delhi, a court has officially charged former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and son‑in‑law Tejashwi Yadav with corruption in an IRCTC hotel‑tender case.
The Rouse Avenue Court said the three men used their positions to swap land for lucrative hotel contracts, a move that critics say cost Bihar thousands of crores and slowed the state’s development.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai called the indictments proof that “the law spares no one.”
“Anyone who commits a scam will be punished,” Rai said. He added that the scams committed during what many call Bihar’s “Jungle Raj” period ruined the state’s finances and reputation.
The charges, filed under Section 420 of the IPC (cheating) and the Prevention of Corruption Act, focus on the time when Lalu Prasad Yadav was India’s Union Railway Minister. The case, which dates back to 2004‑2009, revolves around the awarding of two IRCTC hotel contracts—one in Ranchi and another in Puri—to the private firm Sujata Hotels. In return, land in Patna was allegedly transferred to Lalu’s wife and son.
Rai warned that this move could shape the upcoming Bihar elections. “The people of Bihar will hold those who enabled the Jungle Raj accountable,” he said. He predicted that the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) may never regain power in the state.
The allegations have drawn national attention. Critics say the land‑for‑job scam reflects a broader pattern of corruption that tarnishes Bihar’s image. Authorities say the court will see to it that justice is served and that the film of the “generational scam” ends when the public learns its truth.
